Bioko Turnkey Projects conducted a survey to determine the level of awareness of Equatorial Guineans living on the Island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea) about the health and economic costs of drinking water.
Bioko Turnkey Projects is a company specializing in turnkey projects. Among the services we provide is the installation of water purification systems sufficient to supply the full consumption of a household. Along these lines, in order to have a vision of water consumption in Equatorial Guinea, between January 9 and 13 and February 2018 we conducted a survey whose objective is to know the state of awareness of water consumption among Equatorial Guineans.
The results show that the main source of water consumption is bottled water, and among them, CEIBA mineral water (You can see the complete results in:
The CEIBA mineral water bottled by ENBASA, a company belonging to the Santy Commercial Group, is one of the pioneering brands of bottled water in the Gulf of Guinea. It is a water whose origin is a natural source and its treatment guarantees the cleanliness and purity necessary for its consumption (www.gruposanty.com).
Background
On August 2, 2018, an audio with the voice of an Equatoguinean resident in Spain was circulated on social networks, especially among the WhatsApp of Equatoguineans, alerting the national and foreign population to the harmful effects of the consumption of CEIBA mineralized water where you could hear things like "produces diseases like cancer" and consequently created a social alarm. The basis of his claim is a physio-chemical and biological study of a sample made in Spain, in an undisclosed laboratory and whose results have not been published.
On August 9, 2018, before the SOCIAL ALARM already created, appears again in the social networks some analyses carried out by the Laboratory of the Hospital La Paz, whose results -although they do not specify the regulations on which they are based- meet the parameters of human consumption, although they specify that it has the quality of tap water (tap water), for our understanding sample collected at the point of packaging or origin.
On September 4, 2018 we received several emails from people interested in the subject and, as a result, we decided to meet and give answers to our customers about the quality of Ceiba mineral water..
Procedure
Therefore, on September 7, 2018, the multidisciplinary and international team resident in Madrid, Oviedo and Mexico City (Mexico) of Bioko Projects met to respond to our clients and potential clients, and it is concluded that it is necessary to have a PHYSICO-CHEMICAL and BIOLOGICAL study in an approved laboratory of a representative sample obtained from a batch of bottles purchased in various parts of the country (Equatorial Guinea).
On September 25, 2018, they met and took 12 bottles to the NELSAN laboratories (www.nelsanalimentaria.com) in Madrid to obtain a single representative sample in a sterilized bottle and proceed to its analysis, based on Royal Decree 140/2003, laying down the sanitary criteria for the quality of water for human consumption for the parameters analysed.
Conclusions
As can be seen in the results obtained in the laboratory, which have access to the whole public through the company’s website (www.biokoprojects.com), comply with the parameters required by Royal Decree 140/2003 and therefore Royal Decree 1798/2010.
In the results, we can see the absence of coliform bacteria and E. coli corresponding to microbiological parameters, a near neutral pH (7,17) and a very low conductivity, which makes it a water of weak mineralization, since the electrical conductivity is proportional to the total salt content in solution. Hardness is one of the components in water that generate conductivity and to a greater extent sodium chloride.
Given the customs or habit of consumption of sodium chloride (salt) in the country, this water becomes ideal for consumption given its low concentration in salts (especially sodium chloride) because it is favorable for health, being sodium chloride, responsible for fluid retention in the body that causes a rise in blood pressure. So, by consuming low-mineralization water, we reduce the amount of sodium chloride in the blood that would be increased if a water with a high sodium chloride content were consumed, thereby reducing hypertension.
Clarifications
For the purposes of definition of natural mineral waters, which appeared in Royal Decree 1798/2010 regulating the exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters and spring waters packaged for human consumption, the following are considered as natural mineral waters: a microbiologically sound source originating from an underground layer or reservoir which either springs or can be artificially captured by a borehole, well, trench or gallery, or the combination of any of them. These can be clearly distinguished from the other ordinary drinking waters:
By its nature, characterized by its content in minerals, trace elements and other components and, sometimes, by certain effects.
For your chemical constancy.
Due to its original purity, these characteristics have remained intact, given the underground origin of the water that has protected it naturally from any risk of contamination.
